Free motorcycle VIN number check
Plenty of sites promise a "free VIN check" or "free Carfax". It's worth understanding what is genuinely free and where paid reports add value, so you're not misled.
Genuinely free
- VIN decode — the NHTSA decoder returns make, model, year and specs at no cost.
- Recall lookup — manufacturer and safety-authority sites list open recalls by VIN for free.
- Visual/identity checks — matching the VIN to the frame and paperwork costs nothing.
For a free technical decode of any VIN (make, model, year, plant, specs), use the official NHTSA VIN decoder.
What usually costs money
Full history — title brands, salvage/auction records, odometer readings over time, theft/insurance markers — is compiled by paid providers. Carfax and AutoCheck are paid services; a truly free, complete Carfax report does not exist. Treat "free full report" claims with caution.
Best value: do the free decode + recall + identity checks yourself, then buy one paid history report only when you're seriously considering a specific bike.
